But after a decade, the Zupta hold has been broken and state capture is on the retreat.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000;\">Investigative journalism takes time and money. Help us do more. <\/span><span style=\"color: #000;\"><a style=\"color: #000;\" href=\"https:\/\/amabhungane.org\/be-an-amab-supporter\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Be an amaB Supporter.<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Unfolding events \u2013 Jacob Zuma\u2019s resignation in February, a new president and \u201ccompromise\u201d cabinet, the resignation of the finance and home affairs ministers, the appointment of the Zondo, Nugent and Mpati commissions \u2013 have demonstrated again how valuable an independent media is to democracy.<\/p>\n<p>These are some highlights of our year as reporters:<\/p>\n<h5>Heroes<\/h5>\n<p>The Zondo Commission of Inquiry into State Capture began public hearings in August. For the first time, South Africans heard directly from officials and politicians about the inner workings of state capture.<\/p>\n<p>In September, human rights lawyer Brian Currin, who had advised the two whistleblowers behind the leaked<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"> <a href=\"https:\/\/amabhungane.org\/stories\/special-report-the-guptaleaks-and-more-all-our-stories-on-state-capture-2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">#GuptaLeaks emails<\/a><\/span>, appeared before the commission.<\/p>\n<p>He testified that <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/amabhungane.org\/newsroom\/inside-stories\/#in-conversation-with-the-guptaleaks-whistleblowers\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the whistleblowers, known as Stan and John<\/a><\/span>, remained concerned for their and their families\u2019 safety and could not appear before the inquiry.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI believe the country \u2013 the state and the nation \u2013 owes a huge debt to these two people. If it had not been for them I wonder if this commission would be sitting today,\u201d Currin said.<\/p>\n<p>South Africans also owe a debt of gratitude to other, less celebrated whistleblowers \u2013 one who paid with his life. In an <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/amabhungane.org\/stories\/telling-the-truth-punishable-by-death\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">award-winning story<\/a><\/span>, our Tabelo Timse described the ordeal of two men who had blown the whistle on the Gupta Estina dairy scandal.<\/p>\n<h5>Zeros<\/h5>\n<p><strong>More Gupta plunder: <\/strong>We unravelled further strands of the Guptas\u2019 looting spree. We exposed an <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/amabhungane.org\/stories\/guptaleaks-meet-the-money-launderers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">international money laundering machine<\/a><\/span>; told more about software multinational <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/amabhungane.org\/stories\/saps-guptaleaks-investigation-finds-irregularities-and-question-marks\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">SAP\u2019s collusion with the family<\/a><\/span>; explained how large locomotive procurements were <a href=\"https:\/\/amabhungane.org\/stories\/the-great-train-robbery-part-1-the-zurich-tryst\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">interfered with<\/span><\/a>,<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"> <a href=\"https:\/\/amabhungane.org\/stories\/the-great-train-robbery-part-2-the-choo-choo-switcheroo\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">rigged<\/a> <\/span>and the final <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/amabhungane.org\/stories\/a-total-train-smash-the-r16bn-gupta-premium\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">price inflated by billions<\/a><\/span>; and how the Guptas <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/amabhungane.org\/stories\/the-nkonki-pact-part-1-how-the-guptas-bought-themselves-an-auditor\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">bought themselves<\/a><\/span> an auditing firm <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/amabhungane.org\/stories\/the-nkonki-pact-part-2-eskoms-new-billion-rand-consulting-deal-for-essa-co\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">as a front<\/a><\/span>, using <a href=\"https:\/\/amabhungane.org\/stories\/the-nkonki-pact-part-3-eskom-funded-essas-capture-of-audit-firm\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">public money<\/span><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>We also showed how the Guptas were linked to the <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/amabhungane.org\/stories\/gupta-link-in-r647m-train-deal\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">inflation of costs<\/a><\/span> to relocate a locomotive manufacturing facility, and <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/amabhungane.org\/stories\/the-trojan-horse-that-wheeled-r600m-out-of-state-owned-entities\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">more<\/a><\/span>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Money for jam<\/strong>: In a series of articles, we showed how the Public Investment Corporation (PIC), the fund manager for public servants\u2019 pensions and a dominant player in the economy, had become subject to capture by a different set of interests.<\/p>\n<p>We highlighted unusual<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"> <a href=\"https:\/\/amabhungane.org\/stories\/iqbal-surves-mythical-beast\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">attempted<\/a><\/span> and <a href=\"https:\/\/amabhungane.org\/stories\/surves-listing-ship\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">actual<\/span><\/a> placements worth billions with companies co-owned by newspaper proprietor Iqbal Surv\u00e9; followed up on earlier expos\u00e9s regarding the PIC\u2019s strange <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/amabhungane.org\/stories\/pics-dodgy-oil-investment-going-down-the-tube\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">investment with a politically-connected Nigerian-American oilman<\/a><\/span>; and showed how the PIC had paid an R18.5-million \u201creferral fee\u201d into an offshore account after then finance minister Nhlanhla Nene\u2019s son and his business partner had introduced it to a deal in Mozambique.<\/p>\n<p>These investments are now all being looked at by the Mpati Commission of Inquiry into the PIC.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Scammed:<\/strong> Following an <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/amabhungane.org\/stories\/steinhoffs-secret-history-how-markus-joostes-scam-began\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">in-depth investigation we laid bare<\/a><\/span> how former Steinhoff chief executive Markus Jooste and his inner circle had enriched themselves via self-dealing, pulling down the pillars on which ordinary investors\u2019 wealth had rested.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Landless:<\/strong>\u00a0For black South Africans, dispossession is not something lost in the mists of history: it is a wound within living memory \u2013 and for the majority who are poor, it remains a constant threat.\u00a0We <a href=\"https:\/\/amabhungane.org\/stories\/those-graves-were-our-title-deeds\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">highlighted the cost<\/span><\/a> to communities whose homes have been demolished <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/amabhungane.org\/stories\/cradle-of-conflict\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">to make way<\/a><\/span> for luxury urban real estate developments.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Sinking funds, sunk:<\/strong> We <a href=\"https:\/\/amabhungane.org\/stories\/joburg-anc-leader-scored-millions-from-city-contract\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">published evidence<\/span><\/a> of a R30-million conflict of interest for Geoff Makhubo, the chair of the ANC\u2019s powerful Johannesburg region and a prospective mayoral candidate.
